Rating: - While Waiting for Harry.............
It's difficult to find a book that will capture a young boy's interest while waiting for Harry, but my 9 year old son likes the story line so much, he's stopped playing Nintendo games to read. He's asked me to read to him over breakfast! Although the lead character in the first two books is a girl, Meg Murry, her younger, gifted brother Charles Wallace, plays a major role in all stories, especially the third book. There is a subtle message that I totally missed when I first read these books, some 20 odd years ago, a nice mixture of fantasy, life's meaning, and Meg's difficulty with her hot temper, which (in same situations) has some very positive value. The Murrys are real, loving and likeable. Author Madeline L'Engle uses the characters and the stories, to convey to us thoughts about good and evil, and the strength of a good spirit. You really need to read them in order, so try out the first one. This is an excellent family read together series.
Rating: - The plot boggles your mind!
When I first began reading the book A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle, I thought that it was going to be boring because there were few surprises and little action. However, as I read further I relized that my first impression was wrong. As the main characters, Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin were searching for Charles and Meg's father, they experienced strange places and people. One strange place was called Camazotz, a planet where everyone and everything moved to the same rythm. Amazing as it may seem, this constant rythm was caused by a giant brain sitting on a platform. The children encountered strange people like Mrs. Who, Mrs. Watsit, Mrs. Which and the strange man with the red eyes. The women tried to assist the children in their search but the man with the red eyes took over Chalres' brain. As you can see Madeline L'Engle created this science fiction novel in a very interesting way. If you're looking for creative and descriptive writing read this book. Don't be surprised when Mrs. Watsit "tessers" from being a human to an "animal". After reading this book you will want to be tessered. Won't you?
Rating: - Sci-fi, fantasy, morality, and religion at its best.
When I was in the third or fourth grade, my mother recommended that I read A Wrinkle in Time (the Newbery Award winning first book in this series). I absolutely loved it then. I subsequently bought the series for a young cousin when she was a little older than that. Now, I have read the entire series to my seven-year-old son, and he begged me to read more each night. This is a series that you will enjoy re-visiting time and again, and that you won't mind reading to your children. I actually anticipate re-reading it again to my two-year-old son.
Ms. L'Engle has combined science fiction, fantasy, morality, ancient myths, and religion in a way that is totally enjoyable and not at all preachy. You get to know each of the characters as though they were close friends. You don't get tired of the characters, or annoyed by their insecurities, but rather remember your own inadequacies (past and present) with a little less chagrin. You also really wish you could know what each character is doing right now
