Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - This book IS a joke
Sure, read this book if you want a good laugh--and that's all. I picked up this book in the bookstore and read through it during my first trimester, trying to find some good books to guide me through my first pregnancy. I was so offended I put it right back on the shelf. Her advice on breastfeeding, midwives, and exercise and diet during pregnancy, is just plain ignorant and represents her lack of knowledge in these (and other) areas. Reading the part about her getting dressed up to see her obstetrician was, like another reviewer commented, creepy.
There are so many other excellent books to choose from when you are pregnant, that offer real advice (NOT scary information, like others have commented). What a woman needs when she's pregnant is positive encouragement and useful information during a joyous but at times anxiety-ridden journey in life.
This book is just a joke and an insult to the beautiful experience of pregnancy.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - More than a grain of salt required...
This book is funny, informal, and refreshing. It offers a great counterpoint to all of the technical pregnancy books out there. But boy, is it full of lots of misleading and discouraging information! By all means read it, but treat it the same as you would any advice from a girlfriend -- one thing to consider but no way the last word on anything. Women deserve down to earth, realistic advice when their pregnant, and it's true that books like "What to Expect When Your Expecting" are full of an idealized view of pregnancy and childbirth that make us all feel inadequate (I mean who really can stick to the Best Odds Diet? Find me a nutritionist who says we need THAT many veggies and whole grains!) But Vicki's attitude of totally giving up goes a bit too far. Treat her advice as you would advice from any girlfriend who tells you never to exercise (when is this EVER a good policy?), that labor will be excruciatingly painful and you will never get through without massive amounts of drugs (lovely bit of encouragement there), that pregnancy makes you fat and unsexy (sure, we feel that way at times, but man, do those curves look good in V necks) and that breastfeeding is something to wrap up as soon as possible -- laugh, and take it all with a grain of salt. Those may be her own experiences, but that doesn't mean it has to be that way for you.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - Humorous, but needs to be taken with a grain of salt
I read this book early in my pregnancy, and I laughed and laughed. I even read parts of it aloud to my husband, and even he would laugh at some of it. It's a nice distraction from the medically minded, formal, "This is what's happening to your body and baby right now" books that I had been reading (which are great, but get tiresome). However, I disagreed a lot with her principles and the way she stated them made her seem small and petty. She is a thin, wealthy, stereotypical southern CA mom who has only models and other rich, beautiful women for friends. While what she says is true about our bodies, her attitude that our bodies are the most important thing and we shouldn't let the baby ruin our looks is revolting. Her complete attitude of "trust your doctor and never ask why" is a huge insult to the entirety of women. She doesn't offer options (such as NOT getting an episiotomy, not delivering flat on your back with your feet up, not getting an epidural, etc.) and she states HER views on childbirth and her experiences as the only fact that there is.

However, if you can look past her terrible medical mindset (she admits it's not a medical book) and the fact that all of her friends are self absorbed, rich supermodels, this book can be a great hilarious relief to the medical books that are out there for pregnancy.
